BCCI debates fast-tracking 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for T20Is

The discussion around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shifted from “if” to “when,” and the question now is how soon India should take the teenage sensation into the international fold. The BCCI selection panel is understood to be locked in a serious internal debate over whether the 15-year-old can be fast-tracked ahead of India’s forthcoming T20I commitments against Ireland and England.

Selection debate intensifies

  1. The committee’s deliberations are reportedly focused on whether Sooryavanshi—fresh from a landmark IPL 2026—should be considered for India’s next T20I squad.
  2. Ajit Agarkar and other selectors are said to be weighing the Rajasthan Royals batter’s inclusion despite lingering concerns about rushing a teenager into senior international cricket.
  3. While the debate remains, his performances have reportedly made him too hard to ignore, setting up the possibility of one of the boldest selection calls in recent Indian cricket history.
  4. The internal understanding is that selectors are seriously considering handing Sooryavanshi the national cap, even though the appropriateness of bringing a 15-year-old in so early is still being questioned.

Sooryavanshi, who is all of 15, finished one of the most eye-catching IPL seasons ever seen. He amassed 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30, a run tally that secured him the Orange Cap and also earned him the Super Striker award.

His power-hitting numbers provided another headline moment. He struck 72 sixes in the tournament—also the most by any batter in a single IPL season—collecting the Most Sixes award in the process. Beyond that, his overall impact saw him named Emerging Player and Most Valuable Player of IPL 2026.

Importantly, his IPL surge did not arrive in isolation. During the middle of his extraordinary campaign, Sooryavanshi was already rewarded with a call-up to the India A squad for an upcoming one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka. The competition will include Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A later this month.
