Sooryavanshi buzz grows: Can 15-year-old star earn India T20I berth vs Ireland?

The push to fast-track Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into India’s senior men’s setup is only getting louder, with growing attention on whether the 15-year-old will earn a place in the main squad ahead of the next T20I assignment versus Ireland. The youngster is also drawing notice from key decision-makers, including chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, as he continues to pile up standout performances in the shortest format.

On Friday, Sooryavanshi underlined that case in emphatic fashion against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He struck 78 runs off just 26 deliveries, smashing eight fours and seven sixes in the process. His explosive knock has added to the momentum building around his rapid rise.

Why Sooryavanshi’s case is being pushed

  1. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said Sooryavanshi deserves to be considered for India’s youngest-ever debut, pointing to the consistency of his recent performances.
  2. Dhumal also underlined the rarity of the opportunity to back a player who is both highly talented and extremely young, arguing that Sooryavanshi should be recorded as the youngest debutant for India if he gets the chance.
  3. Sooryavanshi became eligible for the senior men’s team in March 2026 after turning 15.
  4. The left-handed batter has already made a mark for the U19 side, including a 175-run innings in the World Cup final against England, but it is his impact in the IPL that has accelerated conversations.
  5. It remains to be seen whether India’s upcoming Ireland series will provide the platform for his senior debut, given the competing demands of squad selection and readiness.

Sooryavanshi’s dominance against RCB came as he took on some of the most proven names in franchise cricket. In that match, he punished Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood and Krunal Pandya—experienced campaigners who have regularly delivered under IPL pressure.

Against Hazlewood in particular, Sooryavanshi faced only four balls, yet still managed to score 18 runs, including three boundaries and a six—an illustration of how quickly he can change the tempo of an innings.

His form has carried into recent meetings as well. The previous game against the Mumbai Indians had suggested Jasprit Bumrah might control the left-hander, but the script did not play out that way. Sooryavanshi showed little hesitation against the world’s best, launching a six off the first delivery he faced from Bumrah.

Orange Cap climb and match-winning impact

Sooryavanshi currently leads the Orange Cap race, sitting on 200 runs from four matches. He has notched two fifties so far, and both have been completed from just 15 balls—highlighting the speed at which he is converting starts into big totals.

His innings against RCB also earned him the Player of the Match award. Rajasthan successfully chased RCB’s target of 202 with 12 balls to spare and maintained a six-wicket cushion, with Sooryavanshi’s fireworks playing a central role in getting the job done.

As the debate over a potential India debut grows, the 15-year-old’s performances in the IPL continue to strengthen the argument that he could become the youngest player to represent the senior team—though the final decision will ultimately rest with the selection panel and the team management.
