Abhishek Sharma’s Golden Duck vs RR Sparks Quiet Alarm in Hyderabad

A tense, almost silent moment swept the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad after Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for a golden duck against the Rajasthan Royals. The setback was especially striking given how often the batter sets the tone with power and pace at the start of an innings.

Golden duck as the chase begins

Royals pacer Jofra Archer struck with the opening delivery, getting Abhishek out on the very first ball. Abhishek, who typically looks to attack from ball one, charged down the track with intent. But the attempt only produced a thick top edge, leaving an easy opportunity in the field.

Ravi Bishnoi completed the catch without fuss in the deep, bringing an abrupt end to Abhishek’s innings. As he returned to the pavilion, he visibly expressed frustration by striking his gloves against his bat, clearly disappointed at failing to get off the mark.

What the dismissal says about Abhishek’s season

The duck added to a difficult run for Abhishek in T20 cricket this year. It was his seventh scoreless innings in 18 T20 matches in 2026, the highest such total by any player during the year. Cooper Connolly was next in the rankings, with four ducks across 17 innings.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, the match also carried historic weight. Only Shikhar Dhawan had previously been dismissed for a first-ball duck in an IPL match for the franchise—when he fell against Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 Qualifier 1. With this dismissal, Abhishek has now joined that unwanted list.

Rajasthan set the tone after winning the toss

Earlier in the day, Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag won the toss and chose to bowl. The Royals made two changes, resting Shimron Hetmyer and Brijesh Sharma. They replaced them with Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Tushar Deshpande.

Sunrisers Hyderabad also shuffled their batting unit. Praful Hinge was included in their XI, while Harshal Patel was named among the impact substitutes.
