BENGALURU: For more than twenty years, Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid often moved in tandem, representing India, Karnataka and Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a dependable core built on discipline and standards. It was uncommon to see them facing each other. Now, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, that familiar symmetry has been altered—at least in a symbolic way.
In a decision announced by the Karnataka State Cricket Association in February, bowling ends at their home ground have been named after the two former India captains as a tribute to two of the state’s most celebrated sons. The gesture is set to ensure their legacy continues to be visibly present every time the stadium lights up.
On Sunday, ahead of the southern derby between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, Kumble and Dravid—along with their families—formally unveiled the named ends. The event was brief, yet deeply emotional, and it drew a packed crowd that welcomed the legends with a loud, long ovation.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium, a place that helped shape their rise from promising cricketers to enduring icons, seemed to resonate with applause as the two walked out together for what felt like another chapter in their shared story.
Venkatesh Prasad, a former India teammate who now serves as the KSCA president, along with secretary Santosh Menon, presented formal citations to the duo. Kumble began his remarks in English before switching to Kannada, though the impact of his words was largely swallowed by the volume of cheers coming from the stands.
Kumble and Dravid both expressed gratitude to the KSCA for the honour, while also acknowledging the influence of the BCCI, their families and the fans who backed them throughout their journeys.
The moment carried extra warmth with their loved ones standing beside them. Kumble was accompanied by his wife, Chetana, and their children—Aaruni, Mayas and Svasti—while Dravid’s mother, Pushpa, and brother, Vijay, were also present.
Once the ceremony concluded, Kumble returned straight to his broadcaster responsibilities, whereas Dravid spent time interacting with players from both sides. At a venue where they built their legacy together, Kumble and Dravid are now permanently linked in the stadium’s story.
