Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag delivered a statement innings in IPL 2026, smashing 90 runs off just 50 balls against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on Friday. The knock, powered by eight boundaries and five maximums, provided the spark RR needed after an early wobble left them reeling at 12 for 2 inside the first 1.5 overs. Ultimately, Rajasthan posted a commanding 225 for 6, with Parag’s late acceleration turning the contest in their favour.
However, the innings didn’t start smoothly for the Royals. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi both departed on low scores—Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi falling for single digits—leaving RR struggling to find momentum. In that pressure phase, Parag’s aggressive batting and control over the innings proved decisive, rescuing the team from a difficult position and setting up a massive total.
Reactions to Parag’s innings
Parag’s return to form also drew plenty of attention online. One fan praised his dependable technique, strong leadership instincts, and attacking approach, while arguing that he still needs to improve consistency and adopt a more courteous and modest manner.
That comment was followed by backing from former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, who described Parag as a “sweet, misunderstood kid.” Ashwin said he has shared the dressing room with him and believes Parag is exactly that—sweet, yet often misread.
Off-field controversy and disciplinary action
While Parag’s batting drew headlines, he also found himself at the centre of controversy earlier in the tournament. He was caught on camera vaping inside the dressing room during Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur.
In the aftermath, the franchise captain was fined 25% of his match fee on Thursday for bringing the game into “disrepute.” The BCCI said the penalty was accompanied by one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, specifically during Match No. 40 of IPL 2026 against Punjab Kings.
The governing body further noted that Parag admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction handed down by match referee Amit Sharma. The statement also suggested that additional steps could be considered not only against Parag, but also against Rajasthan Royals, its officials, and players.
It added that the BCCI is exploring further options to initiate proceedings for tougher action, with the aim of safeguarding the IPL’s reputation.
