Urvil Patel made his IPL breakthrough feel almost effortless on Wednesday night, stressing that his stunning batting display against Lucknow Super Giants came from keeping things straightforward—guided by coaching clarity and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s calm instructions. Chasing 204 at Chepauk, the CSK batter produced one of the most explosive power-hitting performances seen in the league, striking 65 off only 23 deliveries. Just as impressive, his assault included a 13-ball fifty—matching the quickest half-century mark ever registered in IPL history. He finished with eight sixes and two fours, posting a strike rate of 282.61 as Chennai secured a five-wicket win and moved up to fifth in the points table.
After the match, Urvil brushed aside the idea that there was a complicated plan behind the innings. “There was nothing complicated in my mind. I just wanted to bat according to what the situation needed and how the ball came to me,” he said. He also revealed that the coaching staff delivered a single, simple directive before he stepped out. “The coach told me to keep a stable base and then hit. I followed exactly that,” Urvil explained.
Urvil further credited Gaikwad for helping him read the pitch as the chase unfolded. He noted that the Chepauk surface had started playing slightly low, particularly as the innings progressed. “Rutu said the wicket was low and I should be prepared for it. He didn’t overcomplicate things—he just let me play my game,” Urvil added.
The turning point came after Sanju Samson’s early departure, when Urvil seized control and swung the contest decisively in Chennai’s favour. He struck Avesh Khan for three straight sixes, then followed it up by taking apart Digvesh Singh Rathi in another punishing over that combined boundaries with maximums. The right-hander then created another IPL first by becoming the earliest-ever batter to clear the boundary six times within the opening eight balls of an innings. Alongside the fireworks, he also equalled Yashasvi Jaiswal’s long-standing record for the fastest IPL fifty, reaching the milestone in only 13 balls.
Urvil’s blitz provided the ideal platform for CSK, helping them reach 97/1 during the powerplay—the highest-ever powerplay total recorded at Chepauk. That figure surpassed the 91 runs Lucknow Super Giants had posted earlier in the evening. Lucknow did fight back in the middle overs, with contributions from Shahbaz Ahmed and Digvesh Rathi, but the chase ultimately belonged to Chennai. Shivam Dube sealed the finishing touches in the last over, striking back-to-back sixes as CSK completed the required runs with four balls to spare.
