GT’s Win Triggers Orange Cap Shuffle as Purple Cap Race Heats Up

For a short spell during IPL 2026 on Tuesday night, the Orange Cap standings briefly looked like a flashback to the previous season. That illusion didn’t last, though—and there was plenty of movement elsewhere too, with the Purple Cap race throwing up its own set of twists.

Orange Cap leaderboard

Gujarat Titans opener B Sai Sudharsan, the Orange Cap winner from IPL 2025, has been climbing through the run charts at a rapid pace. His knock of 61 versus Sunrisers Hyderabad proved pivotal, and it also marked a remarkable streak: it was his third consecutive fifty and his fourth fifty in his last five innings. Once you account for the momentum involved, it felt like the kind of spell that can quickly turn into something even bigger. By the time he was dismissed in the 17th over of the innings, he had already taken the lead in the overall run-scoring table.

In the chase, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Heinrich Klaasen started with a cushion—just seven runs behind the total Sai Sudharsan had posted. Klaasen crossed that mark without much resistance, but the knock didn’t really resemble one of his best days. Klaasen made 14, and SRH finished on 86, as their batting struggled to find consistent rhythm. Even so, Klaasen’s season tally remains firmly in control of the Orange Cap, with 508 runs to his name.

At this stage of the season, only Klaasen and Sai Sudharsan have broken the 500-run barrier. Behind them sits SRH’s Abhishek Sharma with 481 runs, having contributed just 6 against Gujarat Titans. Next in line is KL Rahul of Delhi Capitals, listed with 477 runs. Shubman Gill, the Gujarat captain and Sai Sudharsan’s teammate at the top end of the order, has 467 runs after managing only 5 against SRH.

Purple Cap leaderboard

The Purple Cap conversation has also been busy. Bhuvneshwar Kumar—who won the award in 2016 and 2017—has company at the top, with Kagiso Rabada joining him as the leading wicket-taker this season.

Rabada’s impact has been especially sharp during the powerplay, and he delivered three wickets in that early phase against SRH. The victims were Abhishek, Ishan Kishan, and R. Smaran. His final figures read 3 for 28, earning him the Player of the Match. He now has 21 wickets, matching Bhuvneshwar’s wicket count. The interesting contrast is in the run flow: Rabada’s economy rate stands at 7.46, while Bhuvneshwar is at 9.15—yet Rabada still holds onto the Purple Cap position. With Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) up next tonight, Bhuvneshwar has a chance to push his advantage further at the summit.

Chasing the leaders are Anshul Kamboj for Chennai Super Kings with 19 wickets, along with Prince Yadav of Lucknow Super Giants and two more names from the middle of the pack—Rashid Khan of Gujarat Titans and Eshan Malinga of Sunrisers Hyderabad—each on 16 wickets. Rashid claimed a wicket against SRH, while Malinga remained wicketless in his spell.

There were also notable jumps from Gujarat Titans’ bowling unit. Prasidh Krishna, after missing almost a month, returned to action and picked up two wickets to move his season tally to 14. Just one wicket behind him is Jason Holder, who has taken 13 wickets in only six games this season. With those returns, Prasidh is positioned at No. 9 on the wicket list and Holder at No. 10.
