Nahid Rana Wins ICC Men’s Player of the Month After Dominating NZ

Nahid Rana has been crowned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2026, a reward for a sharp burst of fast-bowling form that played a major role in Bangladesh’s memorable ODI series triumph over New Zealand. The youngster’s wicket-taking run stretched across consecutive series, underlining why he stood out among the month’s nominees.

Quick facts

  • Nahid Rana named ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2026
  • Bangladesh won an ODI series vs New Zealand, with the final result 2-1
  • Rana took eight wickets in three ODIs against New Zealand
  • He also picked up eight wickets in Bangladesh’s ODI series against Pakistan in March
  • This is Rana’s first ICC monthly award
  • He is the first Bangladesh men’s player to receive the honour since Mehidy Hasan Miraz in April last year

Rana’s impact was immediate and consistent, coming through in back-to-back ODI assignments. Against New Zealand, he delivered a total of eight wickets across three matches, keeping pressure on the visitors and helping Bangladesh turn key passages of play.

The April award also marks a first in Rana’s ICC monthly accolades, while adding another milestone for Bangladesh. It makes him the first men’s player from the country to win this specific ICC monthly recognition since Mehidy Hasan Miraz received it in April of the previous year.

From tough start to series hero

Despite the celebrations at the end of the tour, Rana’s series began with a bump. In the opening ODI, he claimed just one wicket and conceded 65 runs, failing to fully disrupt New Zealand early on.

However, he responded emphatically in the second match, producing a devastating spell of 5 for 32. It was the second five-wicket haul of his ODI career, and it came with the right balance of early strikes and follow-through, stripping away important top-order partnerships before the innings was shaped for the lower order.

New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 198, allowing Bangladesh to square the series. Rana’s turnaround from the first game set the tone for what followed, with his figures becoming the difference between a flat start and a series-level comeback.

Rana carried that momentum into the decider in Chattogram, adding two more wickets as Bangladesh completed the job. The hosts held their nerve to win the series 2-1, with his overall return reading eight wickets at an average of 16.75 and an economy rate of 4.46.

His contributions were recognised twice—he earned both Player of the Series honours and the ICC monthly award for April. The combination of wicket-taking output and control in the middle overs proved decisive in a tightly fought set of matches.

“A series I will always cherish”

Speaking after receiving the award, Rana said the recognition carried added weight because it came after performances against a top side on home soil. For him, the timing of the honour was as meaningful as the numbers themselves.

“It’s a great feeling to be named the ICC Player of the Month after performing well against a world-class side like New Zealand,” Rana said. “To deliver on home soil made the series even more special. It was a series I will always cherish.”

At just 23, Rana’s rise is gathering pace, and his recent form suggests Bangladesh may have uncovered a pace spearhead for the years ahead. With his ability to swing matches through wicket bursts and economical spells, he is continuing to build a reputation that could travel well beyond this ODI stretch.
