Cricket Canada Names Monty Desai as Men’s National Team Head Coach

Cricket Canada has moved to reshape its men’s national team setup by naming Monty Desai as head coach, describing the decision as a “pivotal moment” for the future of cricket in the country. The appointment signals a renewed push for long-term development, with the board framing the change as part of a broader plan to build stronger structures and raise standards across the game.

Desai arrives with a wealth of coaching experience, having spent more than two decades in international cricket environments. His background includes significant impact at the Associate level, where he has been credited with helping teams progress through major milestones. One of his standout contributions was during his work with Nepal, where he played an important role in the side’s return to ODI status and their qualification for multiple ICC global tournaments.

In announcing the move, Cricket Canada president Arvinder Khosa underlined the need for both ambition and sustainability. Khosa said the organization’s priority is to restore its prominence by improving on-field performance while also strengthening professionalism and giving the team a renewed sense of direction and purpose. He stressed that the objective is not only immediate improvement, but also durable growth that can carry Canadian cricket forward over the long term.

Khosa also pointed to Desai’s experience with Associate nations, highlighting his work with teams including Nepal and Afghanistan. In Khosa’s view, that exposure has shown Desai’s ability to reshape squads through strong leadership, discipline, and a well-defined long-term plan. He further noted the timing of the appointment, referencing Canada’s recent participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and suggesting the fresh leadership will build on the momentum created by that campaign.

Speaking after taking charge, Desai expressed both gratitude and optimism about the challenge ahead. He said he was honoured to accept the role and thanked Cricket Canada for placing its trust in him. Desai also referred to his previous experience in Canada, saying it has given him a clear picture of the system’s potential and the genuine passion that exists for cricket in the country.

Desai went on to emphasize the growing influence of Associate teams in world cricket, arguing that this pathway is increasingly central to the sport’s global expansion. He cited examples such as Nepal and Afghanistan, saying their journeys have shown how belief, discipline, and fearlessness can open doors at the highest level. He added that Canada has a similar opportunity and stated his intention to build a culture capable of turning that promise into consistent international performances.
