Chennai Super Kings—five-time IPL winners—have endured a shocker to begin the 2026 season, dropping their opening three matches in a row and finding themselves rooted at the bottom of the standings. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the franchise still has not managed to get off the mark in the points table, with performances underwhelming in every phase of the game. The pressure has intensified after CSK’s heavy defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a match in which they conceded 250 runs, leaving skipper Gaikwad and head coach Stephen Fleming facing sharp scrutiny.
With the campaign spiralling, one CSK supporter took to social media to make a light-hearted but pointed request to the team’s management. The fan urged the franchise to bring in Kevin Pietersen as a mentor, hoping the former England batter’s experience could help arrest the slide. Pietersen, often known simply as KP, had served as a mentor for Delhi Capitals last season; however, for IPL 2026 he chose to step away from the role and returned to the commentary set.
The idea gained extra attention because Pietersen recently made headlines for a mid-season trip to the Maldives during IPL 2025, and the former captain once again referenced the same destination in his response to the CSK fan. Replying on X (formerly Twitter), Pietersen wrote: “Yes, please. It’s closer to Maldives. Easier travel for me.” After Pietersen’s message, Delhi Capitals also joined the thread and tagged KL Rahul, reflecting the close rapport Pietersen and Rahul had built last season, when the pair were frequently spotted exchanging jokes.
CSK’s uphill battle without Dhoni and Brevis
CSK’s early struggles have also been compounded by the absence of MS Dhoni and Dewald Brevis. The five-time champions lost their first three outings against Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Both Dhoni and Brevis are expected to be available for CSK’s next assignment against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 11, which could offer the side some much-needed stability at this stage of the competition.
Dhoni is scheduled to undergo a fitness assessment in the coming days, and if he passes the test he is set to feature in the match versus Delhi. After the defeat to RCB, Fleming said Brevis is progressing well in his recovery and is likely to be back in time for the contest against the Capitals.
Heading into this season, CSK have had a difficult stretch across the last three years. Last year was particularly rough for the franchise, with the team finishing at the bottom of the points table for the first time in their history. In contrast, Delhi Capitals have started IPL 2026 with momentum, winning their first two matches—over Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians—giving them a very different trajectory as they prepare to face CSK.
Before that clash, the Axar Patel-led Capitals will play Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, April 8. After that match, attention will quickly shift back to Chennai, where CSK will be hoping Dhoni and Brevis can return and help turn around a season that has begun in disastrous fashion.
