Delhi Capitals Fined for Slow Over-Rate vs Punjab Kings in Dharamsala

NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals were fined during their IPL 2026 meeting with Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala after the side failed to complete their allotted overs within the required timeframe. The penalty was linked to a slow over-rate, with the issue surfacing in the 20th over of Punjab Kings’ innings.

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and chose to bowl first. Despite the decision, the visitors found it difficult to rein in Punjab Kings’ aggressive batting. The over-rate breach meant DC had to operate with four fielders outside the 30-yard circle instead of the allowed five during the final phase of the innings.

Punjab Kings then made the most of the situation, posting a commanding total of 210/5 from their 20 overs—also their highest first-innings score against Delhi Capitals in IPL history. The innings featured a standout contribution from Priyansh Arya, who struck a rapid 56 off 33 balls, while Shreyas Iyer provided the stabilising finish with an unbeaten 59 off 36 deliveries.

Punjab Kings set the tone in the powerplay, piling up 72 runs in the opening six overs at an economy-rate of 12.00. The surge included four boundaries and six maximums. Delhi Capitals managed to tighten the contest for a period in the middle overs, but Punjab Kings re-accelerated late, smashing 61 runs in the last five overs with five sixes to complete a dominant end to the innings.

For Delhi Capitals, Mitchell Starc and Madhav Tiwari took two wickets apiece. However, Starc’s figures proved particularly costly as he conceded 57 runs, the most expensive spell of his IPL career. It was also the second-highest run haul he has given away in any T20 innings, surpassed only by the 60 he conceded against New Zealand during the 2021 T20 World Cup final in Dubai.

Punjab Kings’ batting display further underlined their growing trend of 200-plus totals. With this effort, they reached seven scores of 200 or more in IPL 2026—one short of the joint IPL benchmark of eight, recorded by Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 and Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026.

There was also a notable bowling angle for Delhi Capitals: the team stuck with a pace-heavy plan for the entire innings. That marked the 13th time in IPL history that a side has bowled all 20 overs with pace in a single innings, and the first such occurrence since 2016.
