Eoin Morgan has praised Punjab Kings for the way their batting has developed in IPL 2026, saying the side no longer has to depend on a single player delivering on any given day. Speaking during the broadcast on Star Sports after PBKS beat Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs, the former England captain highlighted how the franchise’s batting depth is now producing results through collective output rather than isolated bursts of brilliance.
Morgan noted that when PBKS get on top early, the pressure often shifts away from their marquee names. He pointed out that their batting order has reached a stage where even if individual batters fail to find their rhythm, the team’s overall structure still allows them to post imposing totals. “Punjab Kings have reached a very strong position where they are no longer solely reliant on their captain or a superstar to deliver every time. They were so far ahead in the game that individual contributions almost became secondary; such is their depth that they would likely have posted 230-240 regardless,” Morgan said. “This allows them to ease the pressure on key players like Shreyas Iyer. When the rest of the batting unit is firing, it strengthens the side further, even if some players haven’t had much time at the crease.”
The analysis quickly turned to Priyansh Arya, with Morgan singling him out as one of the standout young performers of the tournament. He praised Arya’s fearless approach and consistency, describing the batter’s preparation and decision-making as evidence of a calm, long-term mindset. Morgan also credited the leadership group behind him, including head coach Ricky Ponting, for supporting a development plan rather than treating batting form as a short-term project.
On Arya’s batting approach in IPL 2026, Morgan said, “It reflects a clear and confident mindset. He comes across as a transparent thinker who is making the most of his opportunities over time. This is not a short-term phase of form; it’s part of a larger plan by Punjab Kings and Ricky Ponting, with a defined template in place. Priyansh Arya is undoubtedly a key component of that structure.”
PBKS’s statement victory also carried major tournament implications. The franchise sit at the summit of the table, remaining unbeaten with five wins and one no result to collect 11 points. Lucknow, meanwhile, are positioned eighth, having won two matches and lost four.
In the match itself, Punjab Kings built a massive platform, finishing on 254/7. Priyansh Arya played a dominant innings of 93 off 37 balls, striking four fours and clearing the ropes nine times. His power-hitting set the tone, while Connolly’s contribution helped PBKS push the total to a level that proved extremely difficult for LSG to chase.
Lucknow did show signs of resistance. They got a strong start through a 61-run opening partnership between Ayush Badoni and Mitchell Marsh, with Badoni scoring 35 off 21 balls including five boundaries and a six, and Marsh making 40 off 28 balls with three fours and two sixes. Rishabh Pant then launched a counter-attacking spell, finishing with 43 off 23 balls featuring a four and four maximums, but the response still fell short.
With this win over LSG, PBKS made history by becoming the first team ever to remain unbeaten through their first six matches of an IPL campaign.
