Gill Rejects Excuses as GT Set for Must-Win vs CSK After KKR Loss

Gujarat Titans are still one win away from writing a guaranteed playoff place into their IPL 2026 story. With the league stage nearing its conclusion, the Shubman Gill-led franchise must secure victory in their last-round clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to ensure a top-four finish. That urgency has only intensified after Gujarat suffered a 29-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Saturday, a result that kept the home side’s qualification hopes very much alive and left Gujarat with no room for error in their final league match.

The Titans’ downfall was largely self-inflicted. They were guilty of dropping four catches during KKR’s innings, and Finn Allen endured two let-offs—both of which proved costly. Allen took control with a blistering knock of 93 from just 35 balls, striking 10 sixes along the way and setting a platform that proved too strong to chase down. After the loss, Gill was direct in his assessment, choosing not to cloak the defeat behind excuses and instead pinpointing the moments that swung the contest.

Gill pointed to the fielding lapses as the deciding factor. Reflecting on the chase, he said that based on the look of the wicket, they believed totals in the 200–210 range were achievable, but the game became difficult once their side failed to hold on to key chances. “When you drop three, four catches in a game, it’s never easy for the bowlers,” Gill said, adding that the fielding standard they set for themselves was not maintained. He further stated that dropping “three sitters” in a match like this meant they did not deserve to come out on top.

KKR’s innings itself explained why the missed chances mattered. They finished on 247/2 in 20 overs, with Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green all finding half-centuries to steady the chase-proof total. Gujarat’s response, led by Gill and Jos Buttler, showed plenty of intent—Gill made 85 and Buttler contributed 57—but it still wasn’t enough to overhaul the target. Gill also offered context on the pitch, noting that it played well, with the ball showing the odd bit of stopping and sticking, and he felt they batted with purpose to reach the score they did.

Now the focus shifts immediately to the next challenge. Gujarat Titans will face CSK at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday, May 21, with a win required to lock in their playoff berth. A defeat would force them to lean on results elsewhere, as they would no longer control their own fate. Heading into that final league game, Gujarat sit second in the IPL 2026 points table, collecting 16 points from 13 matches. When asked about the approach for the CSK match, Gill’s message was simple: “Rest and recover for the next couple of days and see how the wicket is and plan accordingly.”
