KKR Hold Off Gill Scare, Beat GT by 29 to Keep IPL Playoff Hopes Alive

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes ticking with a 29-run victory over Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Saturday, a result that ended Gujarat’s run of five straight wins. In front of their home crowd, KKR defended a target of 248 after restricting the Titans to 218 for 4, with captain Shubman Gill continuing to fight hard even as the chase slipped away in the later stages.

Gujarat’s reply was driven by Gill, who struck 85 from 49 balls, finding the boundary five times and clearing the ropes on seven occasions. Jos Buttler contributed 57 off 35 deliveries, while Sai Sudharsan, returning to the field after retiring hurt earlier in the innings, finished unbeaten on 53 from 28 balls. Despite those efforts, KKR managed to regain control after two crucial dismissals swung the momentum firmly in their favour.

The story of the game began with Gujarat’s early push. Sudharsan and Gill put on 42 runs in the opening three overs, giving the Titans a platform to chase from the front. However, Sudharsan was forced to retire hurt after an elbow knock, and Nishant Sindhu came in to replace him. Sindhu did not last long, dismissed cheaply by Sunil Narine, who was also playing his 200th IPL match—a milestone overshadowed only by the impact he had with the ball.

Gill kept attacking after that setback, picking up boundaries and striking sixes against Narine, Anukul Roy and Varun Chakaravarthy as the chase gathered pace. Buttler, too, looked comfortable once he settled in, and the pair ensured Gujarat remained in the hunt. Gill reached his half-century in 33 balls and kept finding ways to keep the required rate under pressure, while Buttler brought up his own fifty as the Titans moved to 177 for 1 after 16 overs, needing 71 from the final four frames.

But the match turned sharply when Narine struck again, getting Gill out caught by Anukul Roy at the boundary. Almost immediately after, Buttler departed while trying to accelerate further, offering a catch to Saurabh Dubey at long-off. With the pressure mounting and wickets going down, Sudharsan returned to complete his innings and reach his fifty, yet the target remained beyond Gujarat’s reach. Rahul Tewatia was dismissed late in the innings by Cameron Green, and that was the final blow as KKR closed out the win.

For KKR, the victory moved them into seventh place on the points table, sitting two points behind fourth-placed Punjab Kings. Earlier in the day, the foundation had been laid with the bat as Kolkata posted 247 for 2, with Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green all making meaningful contributions. Allen set the tempo by smashing 93 off 35 balls, while Raghuvanshi followed with an unbeaten 82 from 44 deliveries. Green remained not out on 52 from 28, helping KKR race close to the 250-run mark.

Gujarat’s chase was also shaped by their fielding, which let KKR gain valuable momentum during the innings. Ultimately, it was KKR’s discipline in the closing overs and Narine’s key breakthroughs that carried them to a 29-run win, keeping their playoff hopes alive at Eden Gardens.
