Hardik Pandya shares key batting tip as Tilak Varma fires maiden IPL century

Mumbai Indians finally found some breathing space in Ahmedabad, and Hardik Pandya made it plain after the match that this was more than another routine league-stage triumph. After enduring four consecutive losses in IPL 2026, MI thrashed Gujarat Titans by 99 runs on Monday, with Tilak Varma delivering a first IPL century and Jasprit Bumrah producing a sharp burst with the new ball to help flip the atmosphere in Mumbai’s favour.

For Hardik, the win carried multiple layers of significance. It snapped Mumbai’s slide, came at a ground where they had struggled considerably against Gujarat Titans, and arrived on a night when Tilak played the kind of innings the franchise had been expecting from him for a long time. The MI captain suggested the knock wasn’t about surprise so much as an overdue moment from a batter he feels has an exceptional ability to hit the ball cleanly.

Hardik Pandya explains why Tilak’s hundred and Bumrah’s new-ball role mattered

“The kind of talent that Tilak has, he really does not need to worry about a lot,” Hardik said following the victory. “So the only message I kept telling him, you’ve got to watch the ball and hit the ball irrespective of what it’s doing, because I genuinely believe the ball travels from his bat is something really special.”

Tilak put that belief into action with a standout 101 not out off 45 deliveries—an innings that swung the contest decisively and could even reshape the direction of MI’s season. He struck eight fours and seven sixes, and once he found momentum, his finishing acceleration in the death overs proved decisive, driving Mumbai to 199/5 after the innings had needed a major revival.

Hardik admitted he was swept up by the impact of Tilak’s hitting as the batter went after the bowling. “It was about time that he comes and delivers. I think a couple of times, I went so loud that I kind of got dizzy. But it was much-needed for the group; it was much-needed for Tilak; it was much-needed for Mumbai Indians; and as a captain as well that kind of energy to change things around.”

While Tilak owned the night with the bat, Bumrah set the tone with the ball. In what was a rare tactical call, he was used in the opening over, and he struck immediately—taking the wicket of Sai Sudharsan with the first delivery he bowled.

Hardik said the strategy was purely about impact. “It’s just that Jasprit Bumrah is so special that you use him whenever he’s required for the team. Not when you start. But today we realised that we really want to make an impact with the new ball and no one’s better than him.”

Hardik also pushed back on the recurring discussion around Bumrah not opening the bowling more often. “I’ve seen a lot of people ask why Jassi has never bowled. So, I don’t think it’s a Hardik Pandya problem.”

For a Mumbai side that had been under pressure from results, Hardik’s closing message captured the mood of the night perfectly: “We just played good cricket, and it feels very special because it was much needed.”
