Jaiswal’s MI Strategy Pays Off as RR Beat Mumbai by 27 Runs

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal credited a composed plan and constant team discussions for his side’s Player of the Match display in their 27-run victory over Mumbai Indians in a rain-affected Indian Premier League 2026 encounter on Tuesday. Batting through a shortened game, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 77 off 32 balls, striking 10 fours and four sixes, as RR posted 150/3 in a match reduced to 11 overs.

During the presentation, Jaiswal explained how he approached the condensed powerplay and what went into his decision-making. With only three overs available in the early phase, he said he had already identified which bowlers he could go after and in what order.

“I had something in my mind because it was only a three-over power play, so I was thinking who I could take on. DC bhai was bowling, so I thought I could take him on. Then Bumrah bhai was going to bowl, so I was thinking Vaibhav can take him and then I can take on someone else,” Jaiswal said.

Jaiswal also spoke about the modern demands of T20 cricket, where players are expected to adapt quickly across formats. He stressed that success depends on preparation and building a range of options rather than relying on instinct alone.

“It is not easy playing all formats. Trying my best every single time. Making sure I develop different shots and understand what to play on which wicket. It helps when I prepare well,” he added.

The young batter further highlighted situational awareness as a major part of his mindset. For him, understanding what the team needs and identifying the correct shots for the situation allows him to play with confidence during the chase—or when setting a target.

“I am just trying to understand the situation and think about what I can do for the team. If I know what is required and which shots are needed, I will go for it,” he noted.

Jaiswal didn’t stop there, praising opening partner Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his impact at the top of the order. He said their on-field communication has been a source of motivation, with both batters exchanging ideas and encouragement throughout their innings.

“The way he has been playing is tremendous. I also get motivated looking at him. We discuss how we can go about things, and I keep giving him positive messages to play freely. He is amazing, understands the game well, and is capable of doing things on his own,” Jaiswal said.

With the result, RR moved to the summit of the points table after three matches, winning all three and producing impressive performances under captain Riyan Parag. RR began their campaign with a win over Kolkata Knight Riders, while Mumbai Indians’ season continued to stall after defeats against Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, leaving them seventh in the standings.

RR’s batting first in the rain-shortened contest helped them set the tone early. In 11 overs, Jaiswal anchored the innings with 77 not out from 32 balls (10 fours and four sixes), while Sooryavanshi contributed 39 off 14 deliveries, including a four and five sixes, giving Mumbai little room to regroup.

When Mumbai Indians chased, they struggled to find a steady tempo and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Burger (2/21), Sandeep (2/25) and Bishnoi (2/26) were the standout bowlers for RR as they defended the total and sealed the match by 27 runs.
