Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s long-awaited tussle with Jasprit Bumrah lit up the IPL 2026 clash between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, with the 15-year-old delivering a statement moment by smashing two sixes in a single over off the pace spearhead. In a rain-affected game reduced to 11 overs per side, Sooryavanshi struck 39 off just 14 balls, while Rajasthan raced to the 50-run mark in only 2.4 overs. The youngster’s fearless brand of hitting left a strong impression across the ground, and after the match MI captain Hardik Pandya made time to congratulate him with a special gesture.
Speaking after the contest, Pandya reflected on the rarity of seeing such maturity at a young age. “It’s quite fascinating to see a 17 or a 16 year old boy playing the way he played,” he said, adding that they had discussed Sooryavanshi at length during the lead-up to the game. Pandya also underlined the confidence and shot-making ability the teenager showed in difficult conditions. “So yeah, amazing to see the way he bats, the kind of fearlessness he has, the kind of shots he has. I wish him absolute good luck in the future,” he added.
With the match narrative already swinging on Sooryavanshi’s fireworks, Rajasthan Royals went on to convert the rain-shortened contest into a decisive win, sealing a commanding 27-run result over Mumbai Indians at the venue on Tuesday. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi combined to turn the shortened innings into a high-impact display as RR posted 150 for 3 in 11 overs, powered by Jaiswal’s unbeaten 77 off 32 balls and Sooryavanshi’s quick 39 after he was promoted into the action.
The platform was laid by the opening partnership, which delivered an 80-run stand at pace and kept the scoreboard moving with relentless boundary hitting, including nine sixes shared between the two batters. Jaiswal set the tone from the beginning, mixing clean timing with brute force as he struck 10 fours and four sixes to steer the innings with authority.
Once RR had built their total, their bowlers maintained pressure and limited Mumbai Indians to 123 for 9. Chasing a target that demanded acceleration, MI struggled to find rhythm, with their top order collapsing early. Ryan Rickelton managed 8, Rohit Sharma 5, and Suryakumar Yadav 6, leaving the visitors at 23 for 3 within the opening three overs.
Tilak Varma (14) and captain Hardik Pandya (9) tried to steady the innings with a few boundaries, but Rajasthan’s bowling remained disciplined, keeping the batters tied down with tight lines while also taking wickets at regular intervals. Although MI briefly gained some momentum during a lapse in the field—where misfields and dropped chances opened the door—Sherfane Rutherford used the opportunity to fire back quickly, striking 25 off eight balls.
Rajasthan, though, responded with control and composure, shutting down the surge as Sandeep Sharma lunged forward to complete a stunning low catch to dismiss Rutherford and swing the momentum firmly back in RR’s favour.
