KKR vs PBKS: Shreyas Iyer’s return sparks pressure as Kolkata look to reset

Kolkata Knight Riders will be chasing a fast recovery when they take on Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday, with their IPL 2026 campaign already off to a nightmare start. Led by Ajinkya Rahane, KKR have dropped both of their opening matches and will feel the pressure of turning things around quickly, especially with rain forecast to influence proceedings at times. The challenge is tough: Punjab Kings come into the contest high on confidence after finishing runners-up in the previous season, and their top order has been carrying form into this matchup.

Key context and individual battles

Punjab Kings’ batting setup has looked particularly smooth, highlighted by new signing Cooper Connolly, who has slotted into the No. 3 position and has handled the transition with ease. For KKR, meanwhile, they have brought in Cameron Green, but the Australian all-rounder is yet to make an impact with either discipline—he has not bowled and has not fired with the bat so far.

All eyes will also be on Shreyas Iyer as he lines up against his former team. Iyer captained KKR to the title just two seasons ago, and his record versus them is strong: he has scored 481 runs against KKR at an average of 40.08, striking at 149.84. He has also produced two centuries and three half-centuries in those encounters, and he is currently in good rhythm. That momentum is complemented by the current form of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, who will be expected to add stability in KKR’s chase and pressure the PBKS bowling attack.

From a matchup perspective, KKR’s bowlers will need to strike early—especially if they can trouble Punjab’s top order. If that happens, pressure could mount on PBKS’ middle phase, which has not fully found its rhythm yet. At the same time, KKR will have to address their own batting problems: their returns in the 7–15 over stretch have been the poorest in the competition since 2025, featuring the lowest strike rate and the fewest sixes in that window.

The most critical duel is expected to revolve around Yuzvendra Chahal, Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh. Rahane has managed just 46 runs from 45 balls against Chahal, and he has been dismissed four times in those encounters. Rinku’s record against the same bowler is also under scrutiny: he has scored 15 runs off 19 deliveries and has been dismissed twice.
