Rayudu Backs KL Rahul’s Mindset After Slow Start Leads to Late Acceleration

KL Rahul struck a fluent 92 off 52 balls, but Delhi Capitals ultimately suffered a narrow one-run defeat against Gujarat Titans, a result that has once again sparked debate about how the opener approaches his batting in the IPL. In the aftermath, Ambati Rayudu pointed to a factor that often gets overlooked in discussions about technique: mindset. With a chase of 211 looming in Ahmedabad, Rahul began with caution, managing just 20 runs from his opening 17 balls as he assessed the conditions and bowlers. The tempo then changed dramatically. Once he found his rhythm, he accelerated with purpose, racing to his half-century in only 29 deliveries. One over in particular—against Prasidh Krishna—spoke volumes about his control and power, with Rahul producing a sequence of 4, 6, 6, 4 that underlined how quickly he could take the game away even when the bowling was of a high standard.

Speaking about Rahul’s innings, Rayudu insisted that his ability to execute shots has never been in question. He suggested that the difference on the day lay in how Rahul chose to apply his intent as the innings unfolded. “Initially he was conservative, he was getting a look in. But he turned it on beautifully. And maybe that’s his role in the DC side, that’s their strategy that he needs to bat deep,” Rayudu said. The way Rahul paced his chase reflected that deliberate plan. Instead of trying to dominate from the first ball, he opted to anchor the innings, keeping Delhi Capitals within reach even as wickets continued to fall at the other end. Through it all, his composure remained steady, and he kept the chase alive by managing his workload until the contest moved deep into the innings.

Rayudu further explained that the real challenge for Rahul is not the range of his strokes, but the choices he makes at different stages of the innings. “We all know that once he gets in, he has the game to play a boundary shot against any delivery. That has been Rahul’s speciality over the years. It’s just his mindset, how and when he wants to do it is what his battle has always been about. Because he has the game to take on the spinners, the fast bowlers as well as every length. So the challenge is the strategy he would come out to bat with,” he added.

Rahul’s intent during the chase was clear from the outset: he aimed to stay until the end and give Delhi Capitals every chance of finishing the job. Although he fell short of delivering a historic win, his 92 still stood out as the highest individual score for Delhi Capitals so far this season, passing the mark set by teammate Sameer Rizvi. Rayudu acknowledged that the innings was shaped by a clear objective, even if the result did not go their way. “Today he wanted to bat deep. He wanted to take it till the end and he has done a fantastic job. Don’t forget he’s played a beautiful innings,” he said.

For Rahul personally, the knock arrives at an important moment. After a tough start to the campaign—where he managed scores of 0 and 1 in his first two matches—his return to form has provided a timely lift to the side. Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have carried momentum into the next phase as they sit with two wins from their opening three games. Their upcoming assignment is against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with Delhi hoping to build on the confidence gained from Rahul’s determined effort and keep their season on track.
