RCB Anxious After Phil Salt Heads to UK for Finger Scan

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been handed a fresh mid-season worry after England opener Phil Salt returned to the United Kingdom for medical checks on a finger problem. The injury has raised uncertainty over whether he will be available immediately for the IPL 2026 season.

Salt, who had been in sharp touch at the top of the order, has already missed RCB’s last three matches. The 29-year-old is understood to have injured his left hand while making a diving effort at deep backward square leg during RCB’s defeat to Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18.

Quick facts

  • Phil Salt returned home for scans due to a finger injury.
  • He has missed RCB’s previous three matches.
  • The injury occurred during RCB’s loss to Delhi Capitals at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18.
  • Salt has undergone scans and both player and franchise are hopeful of a prompt recovery.
  • RCB are currently second in the points table, behind Punjab Kings.
  • Next up for RCB is a match against Lucknow Super Giants.

The report surrounding the incident stated that Salt “damaged a finger on his left hand” while attempting the stop. After that, he went back to the UK at the request of England’s management, and scans have since been carried out with hopes of returning later this month.

Strong start, sudden interruption

The timing is particularly tough for Salt, coming after he had found his rhythm again in the IPL following a quieter stretch internationally. In six innings this season, he has piled up 202 runs at a strike rate of 168.33, including the kind of explosive starts that have also complemented Virat Kohli.

With Salt unavailable, the opening slot has gone to England batter Jacob Bethell. However, Bethell has yet to convert the opportunity into a major impact, scoring 39 runs across three outings so far, and is expected to keep getting chances at the top while the situation is assessed.

Playoff push continues

Despite this injury setback, RCB’s campaign has remained in good shape. They are currently placed second in the points standings, trailing only Punjab Kings, and the franchise is optimistic that Salt’s issue will not turn into a prolonged absence.

Under IPL regulations, RCB could explore the option of bringing in a replacement if the injury is judged to be season-ending. For now, the priority is Salt’s recovery, with the team looking for his return as they edge closer to the business end of the tournament.

As a critical phase approaches, RCB also have a key fixture on the horizon against Lucknow Super Giants next. With their batting unit already considered dangerous, Bengaluru will be hoping the hard-hitting opener is back soon to add further firepower.
