Sai Sudharsan Smashes 57 as He Breaks IPL Record Against Punjab Kings

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan produced a knock that not only shifted the balance of the IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings on Sunday, but also rewrote a piece of league history. Chasing a target, Sudharsan struck 57 from 41 balls to steer his side to a four-wicket win. In the process, he became the batter with the most runs after 50 IPL innings, nudging past a long-standing mark held by Chris Gayle.

The opener’s achievement didn’t stop at the run tally. He also surpassed Gayle’s earlier record for the quickest route to 2,000 IPL runs. Gayle required 48 innings to reach the mark, whereas Sudharsan reached it in 47, underlining how rapidly he has been stacking runs in the league.

How the match unfolded

In the game itself, Sudharsan’s 41-ball 57 provided the backbone of Gujarat’s chase, and the chase was completed with enough overs in hand to keep the pressure from shifting. Gujarat Titans ultimately reached 167 for 6 in 19.5 overs to overtake Punjab’s total of 163 for nine.

Punjab Kings began their innings looking to build momentum, but their start wobbled. By the ninth over, they were 47 for 5, leaving them in a precarious position. Suryansh Shedge then steadied the innings with a 79-run stand off 44 balls alongside Marcus Stoinis, who made 40 as Shedge contributed 57.

Once that partnership ended, Punjab struggled to maintain momentum through the final overs. The batting depth couldn’t consistently convert starts into late acceleration, and the innings closed at a modest 163 for nine.

Gujarat’s chase started with Sudharsan setting the platform through his measured 41-ball stay at the crease. Jos Buttler added 26, while Washington Sundar made 40 to ensure GT had the required momentum when the finish came into view.

For Punjab Kings, the wicket-taking responsibilities were shared effectively. Arshdeep Singh returned figures of 2/24, and Vijaykumar Vyshak also claimed two wickets, finishing with 2/31.

Captains’ thoughts

After the win, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill reflected on the mindset needed for chases that reach the later stages. He said that they would have preferred to keep the chase from going as deep as it did, but emphasised that it wasn’t the sort of wicket where you should automatically aim to finish in 15 or 16 overs. Gill added that the plan was discussed in advance—if a batter is set, he should go deeper because hitting from ball one is not easy.

Gill also commented on the conditions, noting that length deliveries weren’t arriving as they had on other wickets. He credited Washington Sundar for sealing the job and explained that the team chose its left-right combinations deliberately, sending the best batter for the situation and trusting the matchups to carry them over the line.
