Jacob Bethell’s IPL 2026 run with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been cut short due to a finger injury, raising fresh questions for England ahead of their upcoming Test series against New Zealand. The 22-year-old is set to miss the remainder of the franchise campaign after aggravating a left ring finger issue.
Bethell did not take part in RCB’s last league fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday. After the match, captain Rajat Patidar confirmed that Bethell had picked up the injury during play and would be unavailable.
Even with a disappointing 55-run loss to SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Bengaluru still topped the IPL 2026 league standings. That position earned them a spot in Qualifier 1, and RCB are now scheduled to play Gujarat Titans in Dharamshala on Tuesday.
During the IPL season, Bethell appeared in seven matches, contributing 96 runs and offering additional depth to RCB’s batting group. With his injury now confirmed, the focus has shifted to whether he will be fit for England’s opening Test of the home summer.
The immediate concern is Bethell’s availability for England’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, which begins on June 4. Earlier this year, Bethell had risen as a strong option to bat at number three, impressing during the Ashes and including a standout century against Australia in January.
The England and Wales Cricket Board later confirmed that Bethell will travel back to the UK for further medical evaluation. In a statement, the ECB said it has agreed with Royal Challengers Bengaluru that the top-order batter will return home after sustaining a left ring finger injury while playing in the IPL.
The ECB also stated that England’s medical staff will keep a close watch on Bethell once he arrives, before deciding on his participation in the Lord’s Test. The board added that he will be assessed and monitored by the England Men’s medical team on his return to determine his suitability for selection for the Rothesay first Test against New Zealand, starting Thursday, June 4.
Bethell’s injury therefore leaves England with a tense waiting period just days before the start of a significant home Test summer, with the Lord’s opener now a key fitness check.
