Rohit Sharma Leaves MI vs RCB With Hamstring Concern, Fitness Doubt Looms

Rohit Sharma was forced to leave the field early during Mumbai Indians’ chase of 241 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a pulsating IPL 2026 encounter. When the scoreboard read 57 without loss after 5.2 overs, the Mumbai captain signalled that he was experiencing discomfort in his hamstring. He immediately retired hurt and did not return to the batting crease, a blow that disrupted MI’s momentum at a crucial stage of the chase.

Mumbai Indians ultimately finished on 222 for 5 in their 20 overs, falling short of the target despite a late surge from Sherfane Rutherford, who struck 71 off 31 balls. Rohit’s early exit made it difficult for MI to regain control of the run-rate, and although the finish was spirited, the defending champions were unable to complete the chase.

Scans are set to determine the extent of Rohit’s hamstring problem, with the severity expected to guide his availability for the next fixture. Mumbai’s next match is against Punjab Kings on Thursday, April 16, and whether Rohit can take part will depend on the results of the medical assessment. As of now, MI have not issued an official update on his condition.

After the match against RCB, Rutherford addressed the situation and clarified that there wasn’t clarity yet in the dressing room. “I’m not entirely sure yet—maybe it’s a bit of a hamstring issue—but I can’t say for certain. I was in the dugout, so I don’t have much information on it,” he said following the game.

Even with the setback during the chase, Rohit added another milestone to his record as he reached 6,000 IPL runs for the franchise that has won the title five times. He achieved the landmark during Sunday’s match against RCB in Mumbai, further underlining his long-standing impact on the league.

Rohit now stands at 6,013 IPL runs from 231 matches, at an average of 29.76 and a strike rate of 132.82. His tally includes 40 half-centuries and two centuries for Mumbai Indians. Within the franchise’s record books, Suryakumar Yadav is next on the runs list with 3,809.

On the bigger IPL stage, Rohit is also placed second among the all-time run-getters, having amassed 7,183 runs across 276 matches. Virat Kohli remains top in the standings for RCB, with 8,840 runs from 271 appearances.

Against Bengaluru on Sunday, Rohit contributed 19 runs off 13 balls before the hamstring issue forced him to retire hurt, ending his innings early in what was otherwise a dramatic chase of 241.
