Shammi Silva Quits as Sri Lanka Cricket President in Sweeping Board Change

Shammi Silva, the long-serving president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), has stepped down from his role. The resignation comes after Sri Lanka’s President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, pushed for a change in leadership at the national cricket body. Silva, who has been at the helm since 2019, was not alone—other office-bearers have also resigned together.

Quick facts

  • Shammi Silva has resigned as president of Sri Lanka Cricket.
  • His tenure as SLC chief began in 2019.
  • The Sri Lanka President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, had insisted on a leadership change at the cricket body.
  • Other office-bearers and Executive Committee members have also quit.
  • The resignations take effect immediately.
  • An interim body is expected to assume charge after the departures.
  • The SLC decision was communicated to Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Youth Affairs and Sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.
  • The resignations followed an Executive Committee meeting held on Tuesday.

The SLC said in an official statement that Silva submitted his resignation “effective today.” It added that, alongside him, the office-bearers and members of the SLC Executive Committee have also filed their resignations, with immediate impact. The development is designed to clear the path for an interim set-up to run the federation’s affairs.

The statement further noted that the move was formally conveyed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and to the Honorable Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage. The SLC also linked the collective departures to deliberations inside its Executive Committee, which met on Tuesday.

After that meeting, the decision for the leadership group to resign en-masse was taken. “More to follow” was appended at the end of the update, signalling that additional details are expected next.
