Srikkanth slams CSK for handling Dhoni’s fitness amid IPL 2026 exit

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has launched a sharp attack on Chennai Super Kings’ leadership, alleging the franchise mishandled MS Dhoni’s fitness information during IPL 2026 and, in the process, kept supporters in the dark all season. His comments followed CSK’s heavy 89-run loss to Gujarat Titans, which brought yet another frustrating campaign to a close.

Key takeaways

  • Srikkanth criticised CSK for creating constant uncertainty about MS Dhoni’s availability during IPL 2026.
  • He questioned the messaging from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, head coach Stephen Fleming and the support staff about Dhoni being “ready” soon.
  • Dhoni was initially ruled out with a calf injury, with later reports pointing to a thigh strain and discussions around rest.
  • CSK reportedly never made an official call that Dhoni would miss the entire tournament, while he missed away fixtures and appeared only at the Chepauk lap of honour in the final home game.
  • CSK finished 12 points from 14 matches and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Srikkanth targets CSK’s “game-by-game” communication

Speaking on his YouTube channel after CSK’s crushing defeat to Gujarat Titans by 89 runs, Srikkanth said the repeated hints of a quick return gave fans a false sense of hope. He argued that the franchise’s approach—suggesting Dhoni might return for the next match—effectively prolonged speculation rather than providing clarity.

Srikkanth pointed to the early narrative around Dhoni’s fitness. “Before the season started, they said he has got a leg injury and that they are hoping to have him soon,” he said. He then added that Fleming echoed a similar line, and Gaikwad, too, reportedly repeated the message that Dhoni could be available shortly.

In Srikkanth’s view, the communication became more confusing as the season progressed. He said that before matches, CSK would show training-related footage to supporters, implying Dhoni’s fitness and chance of participation. “And then before the match, CSK will have a video of Dhoni training to show the fans and hint he is fit and he might play,” he said.

The former chief selector also criticised the way the injury timeline kept shifting in public reports. Dhoni was initially sidelined due to a calf issue picked up before the tournament. While the expectation at first was that he would miss only a short period, later updates mentioned a thigh strain. Eventually, suggestions emerged that he might have been rested for reasons related to team balance.

“Stop this deception,” Srikkanth says

Srikkanth maintained that despite the uncertainty, CSK never officially confirmed Dhoni would be absent for the entire season. He also highlighted that Dhoni did not travel with the squad for away games and was only seen during the franchise’s last home outing at Chepauk, where he took part in the customary lap of honour. Even then, he said, the debate about a comeback continued.

Adding fuel to the speculation, Gaikwad’s response after CSK’s final league match reportedly came in response to a question about Dhoni’s future asked by broadcaster Graeme Swann. When Gaikwad was asked when supporters should expect an update, he said: “You will know next year.”

Srikkanth argued that CSK should have been transparent from the outset rather than allowing fans to keep guessing. “Then they said, ‘no, no. He is still recovering from the injury’. And then they said he got injured in the thigh,” he said. “Stop this deception. You should make it clear. If he is not going to play the entire season, fair enough. Fans would have been mentally prepared had you made that clear.”

He further claimed that expectations were being manufactured match after match instead of addressing Dhoni’s status directly. “If you ask them on a match-by-match basis, Ruturaj will say ‘the big man will be available for the next game’. He kept repeating it,” Srikkanth said. “That is where the management, the captain and Stephen Fleming should have said it forthright: ‘He is not playing this season, he is not fully fit’. Fans would have agreed and moved on,” he added.

Dhoni’s era, and CSK’s playoff failure

Srikkanth insisted that CSK supporters are already prepared for what comes after Dhoni, arguing that the team’s matches are not actually being shaped by his absence in the way fans are led to believe. “If you look at it honestly, nobody is missing Dhoni. Nobody is asking for Dhoni in the matches,” he said. “I think people are asking why he is not in the dressing room, but how many are asking that he is not playing? The Dhoni era is over.”

He also praised Dhoni’s legacy, calling him “one of the greatest cricketers the IPL has produced and one of the greatest captains,” before reiterating that the franchise should have communicated his situation more clearly. “You should have made it clear. Why do you keep deceiving fans?” Srikkanth said.

CSK’s disappointing season ultimately ended with the franchise missing out on the playoffs for the third year in a row. The five-time champions finished with just 12 points from 14 matches and are expected to remain in the bottom four of the standings.
