Stephen Fleming Ends Buzz: Will MS Dhoni Return to CSK in IPL 2026?

With the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edging toward elimination in the IPL 2026, attention has quickly shifted to a familiar name: will MS Dhoni pull on the yellow again next year as a player? CSK had kept faith in Dhoni by retaining him ahead of the campaign as an “uncapped” option, with expectations that he would help shape the next group of young talents. However, a run of injuries kept him sidelined for the whole season. CSK still have one match left in the league phase, yet Dhoni has neither taken the bat nor worn the wicket-keeping gloves this term.

When CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was asked about what lies ahead for Dhoni, he offered little detail, stressing that the decision rests with the franchise leadership. Fleming and Dhoni have long been linked in the CSK setup—Fleming played alongside Dhoni during the 2008 season before moving into coaching. Even though Dhoni has not been drafted into the playing XI this year, Fleming believes his regular presence has mattered for the younger players behind the scenes.

“It’s a choice for the management. I know there has been a lot of talk about it,” Fleming said. “MS (Dhoni) has been around a lot this year, which is very important for the team and for young players in terms of continuity, so he’s been a big part. He hasn’t played, but he’s still had a big influence on the team.”

Fleming added that CSK have introduced new faces with an eye on the future, while acknowledging that results remain the ultimate measure. “There’s a lot of good things we’ve done,” he said. “We’ve introduced some new players that will hopefully be generation players for CSK. But I know we are judged on results, that’s fair. So yeah, that’s a management call, not mine.”

Dhoni’s role has been a topic of speculation across the season. While CSK officials continued to describe him as injured, multiple theories surfaced—one of the more prominent being the idea that Dhoni might be choosing to stay away from match action so that emerging players could earn more chances. The uncertainty only intensified when reports began to circulate that Dhoni could be preparing to feature in CSK’s upcoming meeting with Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the debate, suggesting that it may not be the right moment to bring Dhoni back, particularly if CSK want to keep giving youngsters extended opportunities to develop under pressure. For now, whether Dhoni returns to play next season remains an unanswered question—one that may not receive clarity any time soon.
