It’s not typical to see a 15-year-old batter strike a cricket ball with the kind of timing, power and control that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shown in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Since the tournament began, the Rajasthan Royals opener has quickly developed a reputation as one of the most punishing hitters in the competition, with his performances drawing comparisons that go well beyond ordinary “talent” talk. Fans and observers have even begun debating whether he looks more like a product of technology than a teenager—such is the ease with which he clears the ropes and racks up runs.
While speaking during an appearance in Pakistan, cricket analyst Nouman Niaz added to the buzz with a light-hearted claim that Sooryavanshi might be carrying an “AI chip” to explain his boundary-hitting. Niaz’s comments were delivered with humour, but they captured the sense of disbelief around the youngster’s output.
Niaz said, “What is that boy! Like WADA does doping checks, he should be sent to some lab, he probably has some AI chip installed in him. He’s absolutely unreal, man. I mean, I’m having such high hopes. What a player he is,” in a video shared online. He then continued to react to Sooryavanshi’s batting, joking that even his expectations for the youngster are sky-high.
As he kept laughing at what he was seeing, Niaz also made a specific observation about Sooryavanshi’s tempo in one game. “I think he played a little slow (against SRH), should’ve had a strike-rate of 300,” he remarked, still clearly stunned by the batter’s overall ability to dominate.
Niaz went on to frame part of Sooryavanshi’s rise in terms of physical development, suggesting there is room for even greater improvement as the teenager grows. “Okay, so medically, when you are 18 years old, your entire body starts to shape. Your shoulders become round, muscles are formed, triceps, biceps, and your core is strong because you have peak surge, hormone, testosterone,” he added, pointing to what he believes could be the next phase of Sooryavanshi’s evolution.
Why Sooryavanshi stands out
Beyond the headline-grabbing “AI” jokes, Niaz also tried to identify the cricketing traits that separate Sooryavanshi from the crowd. He suggested the key isn’t simply raw strength or fireworks, but the way the batter sets up his innings.
“He is 16 years old. When he was born, Virat Kohli was already a world champion. He had already won. Now, what do you see in him? I tried to find out why this is the difference,” Niaz said. He then argued that Sooryavanshi doesn’t rely on a heavy bag of traditional technical flourishes.
“Okay, he doesn’t have a lot of techniques. It isn’t his power but his technique (that helps him play that way). His wrist in play is a big factor and his arc as well,” he added, highlighting the role of hand placement and swing/trajectory in the batter’s effectiveness.
Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 numbers
Sooryavanshi’s statistics this season have backed up the hype. At present, he is the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2026, having made 357 runs in 8 matches. He has already registered a century in the campaign and is currently striking at a rate of over 234—numbers that help explain why even seasoned watchers are struggling to view his form as anything other than extraordinary.
