KKR Bench Pathirana as LSG Opt to Bowl in Bottom-Table IPL Clash

Matheesha Pathirana’s awaited return to action has been pushed back after Kolkata Knight Riders named him on the bench for their high-stakes meeting with Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium. Even though the Sri Lankan pacer was available, KKR chose to stick with the same direction, a decision that heightens the tension in a must-win encounter where both sides currently sit at the bottom of the standings.

KKR’s selection call: continuity over change

Kolkata captain Ajinkya Rahane explained that the team’s thought process was built around maintaining rhythm and backing their existing combination for a crucial game. Rahane said, “We were looking to bat first. At the moment, it’s important to see how we are playing as a team. The bowling unit is coming together nicely. The reason we wanted to bat first was to give freedom to our batting unit so they can bat freely.”

He also pointed to the week-long break as a meaningful reset period. “The week off was really important. We sat together, reflected on the last seven games and areas to improve,” Rahane added, highlighting that the side reviewed key aspects of their performances before returning to match action.

Rahane and Pant set the tone for the contest

Lucknow captain and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to bowl, outlining the team’s intention to apply pressure early. “We want to put the opposition on the back foot first and find answers as a batting group,” Pant said, framing the decision as part of a clear plan for the way the game should unfold.

One enforced tweak in Lucknow’s XI

Pant also confirmed the only change for his side, with George Linde coming into the playing group. “We have a lot of leaders in the group. We are close to finding our way. We just need to stick together,” he said, reinforcing the importance of staying united as the campaign intensifies.
